2) Approach Heaven and learn about the night sky that evening at “Mt. Sunflower Under the Stars”. Join the caravan to Mt. Sunflower from Stephens Restaurant, Highways 27 and 40, Sharon Springs, at 5:30 p.m. Climbing gear is optional. Beef brisket supper begins at 6 p.m. at the highest point in Kansas. Supper costs $12. Please bring cool weather clothing, lawn chairs, flashlights, binoculars and telescopes. In case of inclement weather, event will be held at Wallace County High School, 521 N. Main, Sharon Springs.
3) Oct. 6’s events begin at Mt. Sunflower Bed and Breakfast, 229 N. Gardner, Sharon Springs. Continental breakfast will be served from 7-8 a.m. MDT. Cost is $7 for those not staying at the bed and breakfast.
4) A caravan will leave the bed and breakfast approximately 8:15, headed to Smoky Gardens/Soldier’s Memorial Park, 1710 Road 54, south of Goodland. Beside a bonfire, Gary and Margaret Kraisinger will talk about the Wallace Branch of the Western Cattle Trail at 9 a.m.
5) The caravan will leave Smoky Gardens approximately 11 a.m., headed to the 11:30 a.m. ribbon cutting on the Highway 27 overpass above Kyle Railroad.
6) The caravan from the overpass will arrive at the fairgrounds around noon, (From I-70: Take I-70 Exit 17, go North on Highway 27 until you reach Eight Street. Then turn right (East) on Eight Street till you reach Main Street (Should be first stop sign). Turn left (north) on Main Street and it will lead you to the Sherman County Fairgrounds. ) A chuckwagon will serve lunch for a free will donation. The program will start at 12:30 p.m. Robin Jennison, Secretary of Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, and Richard Carlson, Kansas Department of Transportation will speak, as well as members of the Kansas Byways Committee.
7) Land and Sky Expo will be held at the Sherman County Fairgrounds Ag Building. The public is encouraged to visit the Expo beginning at 11 a.m. to learn more about what the byway has to offer.
8) The caravan will leave the fairgrounds about 1:15 p.m. and will arrive Sawhill Park, St. Francis, around 2 p.m. MDT/3 p.m. CDT. Cake will be served at the park and entertainment will be provided.
9) The new St. Francis Motorcycle Museum, 110 E. Washington, and Quincy Gallery, 109 N. Quincy, will be open for visitors. Two buses with tour guides will take those interested on a tour of the Arikaree Breaks north of St. Francis. If weather is inclement, cake will be served at St. Francis Community High School Auditorium, 100 College.
