Each year the Kansas Masonic Foundation hosts an essay contest for all juniors and seniors in the state. The local St Francis Lodge #404 organizes the contest with the Cheylin and St Francis High Schools, and then judges the submitted essays, picking the top two essays from each school. The first place winner from each school then has their essay sent up for state wide judging.
This year's subject was how you volunteer your time and give to the members of your community and your world. There were a lot of wonderful ways the students work in their communities to server the needs of others, and they wrote very good essays discussing them. The judges had to pick winners based on how well each essay was written. They decided on awarding the first place prizes to Journey Lee from St Francis, and Devon Janicke from Cheylin, and the second place prizes went to Katie Jenik from St Francis, and Reese Leonard from Cheylin. The first place essays were sent up to state, but neither essay ranked at that level.
The Masonic Essay Contest is an annual event, and will be brought to the schools again this year in late September, or early October.
